Clincial Need
Dental materials need better looks while maintaining function

Needs Statement
Within the cosmetic dentistry market, there are many dental restorations available, yet many of them do not appear natural. Dental patients need implants to be as aesthetically pleasing as possible since it becomes part of their face. Many fabrication techniques require more time, money and effort to try and replicate the natural optical properties of natural teeth.
The Problem
Dental restorations replace or restore a patient’s missing teeth or missing parts of their tooth by utilizing an artificial dental material to take the place of the missing tooth. The restorations are composed of 3 mol.% yttria stabilized tetragonal zirconia (3Y-TZP), which exhibits excellent mechanical properties such as high strength, allowing the fabrication of long-span fixed dental prosthesis. However, the esthetic properties can be expanded upon, as the opacity and insufficient translucency of 3Y-TZP has obliged many technicians in the dental industry to apply several layers of veneering ceramics in order to increase the superficial translucency. While higher yttria stabilized zirconia such as 5Y-PSZ is capable of replicating the esthetics and translucency of natural teeth, it lacks acceptable strength and strain strengthening ability.
Our team has developed a simple solution for dental restorations that imbues the translucency and aesthetics of natural teeth without compromising any of the structural characteristics.
